Adoption of power closure systems remains a high growth market as more and more vehicles incorporate some type of solid state control of functions in applications such as sun roof closure, door close assist, power lift gates, and power sliding doors. Historically these applications used simple mechanical systems. In almost all cases these purely mechanical systems have become electro-mechanical and frequently utilize electric motors. For many years these motors have been operated by applying full battery voltage to the motor by using relays. Today, these systems are now being replaced by full solid state solutions. These solutions typically utilize PWM speed control and can be electrically reversible by using H-bridge topologies. A common actuator may incorporate a brush DC motor, motor driver IC or controller. The actuator will also have power management requirements and many different sensing requirements that can range from simple position sensing, to speed and direction sensing, as well as current sensing.
