March, 1997 - The new A3964SLB from Allegro MicroSystems is a dual full bridge motor driver IC which provides pulse-width modulated (PWM) current control of bipolar stepper motors. The new device is capable of continuous output currents of up to ±800 mA, and has an operating voltage rating of up to 30 V.
Internal fixed off-time PWM current-control circuitry can be used to regulate the maximum load current, and an internal precision 2.5 V voltage reference is provided to improve motor peak-current control accuracy.
For each bridge, a phase input controls load-current polarity by selecting the appropriate source and sink driver pair. An 'enable' input on each bridge can be held high to disable the output drivers. Special power-up sequencing is not required.
Internal circuit protection includes thermal shutdown with hysteresis, transient-suppression diodes, and crossover-current protection.
The peak load current is set by user-selectable external resistors, while the fixed off-time pulse duration is set by user-selectable external RC timing networks. The capacitor in the RC timing network also determines the blanking window which prevents false triggering by switching transients.
The A3964SLB in supplied in a 20-lead plastic SOIC package with copper heat-sink tabs, and a 24-lead DIP.
Allegro Microsystems, Inc. serves major automotive, industrial and computer peripheral customers with its growing line of mixed-signal (analog/digital) products. Allegro specializes in developing system-level solutions that integrate proprietary combinations of bipolar, CMOS and DMOS structures into a single, monolithic integrated circuit.
