June 26, 1998 - Allegro MicroSystems Inc. announces the release of the A3966SA and A3966SLB dual full-bridge PWM motor driver ICs. The A3966 was developed specifically to provide a low-cost solution for driving both windings of a bipolar stepper motor. The A3966 features two full H-bridges and internal fixed-frequency PWM current-control circuitry. The H-bridges are each capable of continuous output currents of ± 650 mA and operating voltages to 30 V.
Low output-saturation voltages are achieved with patented Satlington® sink drivers. The Satlington output structure combines the low voltage drop of a saturated transistor with the high current capability of a Darlington driver. The A3966's internal circuit protection includes ground-clamp and flyback diodes, thermal shutdown, and under-voltage lockout circuitry.
The A3966SLB, offered in a power 16-lead SOIC package, is the smallest dual H-bridge with current-control circuitry available today. The A3966SA is offered in a 16-pin DIP.
